Supplies for Palestinian Refugee Women in Egypt

We are on our way to reaching our goal of $100,000,so far, we’ve raised $0.

Goal

Our fundraising goal is $100,000 to help 1,000 Palestinian women and their families in Egypt for one month, covering the costs of food and groceries.

Context

  • There are over 100,000 Palestinian refugees in Egypt fleeing the genocide in Gaza.
  • They have limited support options and few legal opportunities to earn an income.
  • Helping from the West is very difficult. Any cash transaction to the Middle East is often seen as suspicious.

Hello, I’m Wajiha Sasa, Honorary Consul of the State of Palestine in Costa Rica.

I’m here to talk about a secure mechanism we’ve designed to provide groceries and online education to Palestinian refugee women in Egypt.

This is a fundraising campaign that works as follows:

  • All the money raised will be invested in Talabat credits, a multinational food delivery service operating in Egypt, similar to platforms like Uber Eats in our region.
  • Anyone with a mobile phone can order groceries from supermarkets or meals from restaurants and pay with credits previously acquired by a third party.

Talabat will generate, commission-free, credits equivalent to $100 in Egyptian pounds for all the Palestinian refugee women we can support through this campaign.

Why $100?

Non-governmental organizations estimate that 5,000 Egyptian pounds, approximately $100, is the cost required for a family of four to buy groceries for one month.

This offers a moment of relief amidst uncertainty.

Mechanism

The women receiving credits will be identified in partnership with the Palestine Solidarity Network, a grassroots organization working in Egypt.

This ensures that the funds reach those who need them and guarantees transparency in how our donations are used.

Evidence of transactions to Talabat will be published on this site and shared with all registered donors.

The funds raised are only transferred to a legally verified international entity, specifically Talabat.

The credits can only be used by Palestinian women in Egypt for groceries or food, issued by establishments legally registered in the country. This makes the transaction secure.

The only associated cost for the campaign is for educON, a French-Costa Rican company that maintains the contractual relationship with Talabat and manages this campaign. The company charges a 3% fee for developing and managing the campaign and the transaction.

This ensures that the majority of the resources are transferred to the beneficiary women.

A tangible help.

Background

The first campaign supported 100 refugee women from Gaza in Egypt, who received $100 in credit and sent us messages of gratitude.

Since January 2024, Network For Palestine (NFP) has been dedicated to improving the living conditions of displaced Gazan families in Cairo. These families face numerous challenges; unable to obtain working permits, many Palestinians struggle to cover the cost of their living expenses. Monthly rent payments present a problem even for the many families living in substandard, unfurnished apartments. In addition, those suffering from severe injuries from the war often lack the funds to pay for treatment; others who have loved ones trapped in Gaza are faced with the additional burden of saving money to support their families. In response to the enormous pressures displaced Gazans face, Network for Palestine is run almost entirely by palestinian volunteers who came out of Gaza during the current war and dedicated their time and effort to help.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why prioritize aid for Palestinians in Egypt when the situation in Gaza is clearly more critical?

The blockade on Gaza has created an unprecedented humanitarian crisis. The inability to send aid directly to the population has forced thousands of Palestinians to seek refuge in Egypt, where they face precarious conditions due to a lack of documentation.

In this emergency, it is crucial to support humanitarian organizations working in Gaza and Egypt. Your donations can make a difference in the lives of those who need it most. Join the cause!

Why not give the money directly to the people?

Sending international remittances can be very expensive, especially for small amounts. Additionally, many Palestinian women in Egypt lack the necessary documentation to receive transfers.

To expedite aid and respect the beneficiaries’ privacy, we have chosen a credit system. Each family will receive the equivalent of 5,000 Egyptian pounds ($100) to purchase food, medicine, or other essential items through the Talabat platform. This solution allows women to choose what to buy and where to receive their products, ensuring their dignity and autonomy.

Accessing these credits only requires a mobile phone with an Egyptian number, making distribution easier. By consolidating purchases on a single platform, transaction costs are reduced, and the process is streamlined, ensuring that funds reach those who need them most.

Why is the aid directed to women?

Women are impact multipliers. When women have more opportunities, entire families benefit. They tend to invest more in their children’s education and health. About 70% of the victims in Gaza have been women and children. Studies show that investing in women drives greater long-term development. Supporting women is not only fair but also an effective strategy to improve many lives and achieve more equitable and sustainable development.
